Report Code : cm1892 | Publish Date : Upcoming | Industry : Chemicals_Materials | Geography : Global

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is a white/yellowish granule or powder that is a stable, non-toxic, and water-soluble polymer. PVA possesses good film-forming property, and the film formed from it has excellent adhesion, solvent-resistance, abrasion-resistance, high tensile strength, and great oxygen barrier property. Due to PVA possesses both hydrophilic and hydrophobic functional groups, it can act as surfactant, and can be used as a protective colloid in polymer emulsification and suspension polymerization.

Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Films Market Outlook

The Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) films market is anticipated to grow at a substantial rate over the forecast period due to high government focus on green packaging initiative in developed and developing countries and significant shift of the consumers towards environment friendly packaging options. Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) films are degradable in nature and the raw material PVA used for the production of the films is also decomposed into water and carbon dioxide by some microorganisms. Extremely little dioxins and SOx, which are causes for acid rain, are generated when the film is incinerated. Furthermore, it does not damage incinerators as the calorific value during combustion is low at about half those of polypropylene and polyethylene. Moreover, growing packaging industry, particularly for detergents and agrochemicals in countries such as India, China, and Taiwan coupled with increasing application from various end-use industries is further anticipated to boost the the demand for Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) films. However, easy availability of substitute materials and high prices are the major factors hampering the growth of the market. The most common use for water-soluble film is in the manufacture of sachets.  The film may be used on a variety of packaging machines, for example vertical form, fill and seal (VFFS).

Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Films Market Segmental Overview

The report analyses the Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) films market on the basis of application and geography.

Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Films Market by Application

Based on application, the Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) films market is classified into detergent packaging, agrochemical packaging, laundry bags, embroidery and others. The detergent packaging segment is further bifurcated into consumer detergents and industrial detergents. Other applications include laundry bags for hospitals, pigments packaging, concrete additives, etc. Water-soluble Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) films are used for packaging of disinfecting detergents that are used inside toilet tanks. It not only allows the detergent to be placed inside the tank without any need to come into direct contact with the detergent, it also works as a binder that fixes the agent to the bottom of the tank. The demand of polyvinyl alcohol films is growing in the field of embroidery for protection and aesthetic appearance. Embroidery has become a traditional art that can be seen on decorative items, paintings, sarees etc. Also, many antiques are preserved using polyvinyl films, these all applications are contributing significantly in the global polyvinyl alcohol films market. Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) films not only has superior properties as a mold-release film but it also has thermal resistance, making it suitable for use in the moulding of thermoset resins. It is widely used as a mold-release film when making various construction materials such as fibre-reinforced plastic, calcium silicate boards, and acrylic-based artificial marble. Because it is flexible as well as firm, it is used in moulding large-scale items such as ship and vehicle parts. This film is used in the textile industry as it does not contain the antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), thereby reducing the yellowing of textile products.

Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Films Market by Geography

Geographically, the global Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) films market is categorized into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and Rest of the World. Rest of the world comprises of Latin America and Middle East & Africa. North America holds a leading share in the global Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) films market due stringent government regulations for packaging in United States. Asia Pacific is anticipated to grow at a faster pace over the forecast period. The growth of the Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) films market in Asia Pacific is mainly attributed to flourishing agrochemical, textile and electronic industry in developed and developing countries such as China, Japan and India.

Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) Films Market Key Players

Key players of the global Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) films market are KURARAY Co., Ltd, Cortec Corporation, Arrow GreenTech Ltd, The Nippon Synthetic Chemical Industry Co., Ltd, Sekisui Specialty Chemicals America, MonoSol AF, Ltd, Changzhou Water Soluble Co.,Ltd, AICELLO CORPORATION, HK MSD and Chang Chun Group among others. The polyvinyl alcohol films market is characterised by the presence of few players. The key players are focusing on research & development and new product launches that are suitable for various applications. The players usually compete based on factors such as price and product quality in the global market.

Polyvinyl alcohol is used as raw material for manufacturing the Polyvinyl alcohol films. These films are a water-soluble biodegradable film and facilitates water soluble small dose packaging of detergents, water treatment chemicals, agrochemicals, and dyes. Those small water-soluble doses provide ease-of-use and avoid human contact from the inside material. Apart from packaging applications, the Polyvinyl alcohol film is also used for laundry bags and embroidery applications where the film is used as water soluble film.
