Report Code : cm1917 | Publish Date : Upcoming | Industry : Chemicals_Materials | Geography : Global

Refractories are inorganic, non-metallic, porous and heterogeneous materials composed of thermally stable mineral aggregates, a binder phase and additives. The principal raw materials used in the production of refractories are normally the oxides of silicon, aluminium, magnesium, calcium and zirconium. There are some non-oxide refractories like carbides, nitrides, borides, silicates and graphite. Refractories are useful in constructing application-specific high temperature areas, particularly in furnaces or boilers, as they minimize heat losses through structure. In addition to being resistant to thermal stress and other physical phenomena induced by heat, refractories can withstand physical wear and corrosion caused by chemical agents. Thus, they are essential to the manufacture of petrochemical products and the refining of gasoline.

Refractories Market Outlook

The global refractories market is witnessing significant growth owing to increase in infrastructural development in developing countries. Moreover, the overall market is also being propelled by high growth rate witnessed by the non-metallic minerals industry and escalating demand for high-grade refractories from the iron & steel industry. Furthermore, surging market penetration in emerging countries, recycling of refractory materials and industry consolidation would further provide significant growth opportunities to this market. However, the market is hampered by restrictions on the use of refractories due to the growing environmental concerns.

Refractories Market Segmental Overview

The report analyses the global refractories market based on form, material, end use industry and geography.

Refractories Market by Form

Based on form, the market is categorized into refractory bricks & shapes, monolithic refractories and other refractory forms. The refractory bricks & shapes includes standard bricks and preformed shapes. Whereas, the monolithic refractories majorly comprise of castables, plastic & ramming mixes, gunning mixes and bonding & other mortars. Refractory castables can be used to create the monolithic linings within all types of furnaces and kilns. There is a wide variety of raw materials that refractory castables are derived from, including chamotte, andalusite, bauxite, mullite, corundum, tabular alumina, silicon carbide, and both perlite and vermiculite can be used for insulation purposes.

Refractories Market by Materials

Various materials of this market are segmented into non-clay refractory and clay refractory products. The non-clay refractory materials include magnesite & chrome, zircon & zirconia, extra-high alumina, ceramic fibers, silicon carbide, graphite & carbon, mullite, silica, dolomite and other nonclay refractories. Whereas, the clay refractory products comprise of high-alumina, fireclay and insulating materials. Insulating castables are specialised monolithic refractories that are used on the cold face of applications. There are made from lightweight aggregate materials such as vermiculite, perlite, extend-o-spheres, bubble alumina and expanded clay.

Refractories Market by End Use Industry

On the basis of end use industry, the refractories market is categorized into cement, ceramics, energy & chemicals, glass, iron & steel, non-ferrous metal and other end-user industries. Iron and steel industry are the major consumer of refractories. The different areas of the manufacturing processes in iron and steel industry are exposed to different temperatures, slag and sulphur gases. The diversity in the operating conditions of different equipment’s demands different grades for different areas of application.

Refractories Market by Geography

By geography, the global refractories market is studied across the countries of key regions such as, North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and rest of the world regions which includes Latin America, and Middle East & Africa. Asia Pacific accounted for the largest market share in 2018, primarily driven by increasing construction activities coupled with supportive government regulations in countries such as China, India, and Japan. These countries are the major contributors to the growth of iron & steel, glass, and non-ferrous metals industries in the region. These industries are witnessing growth owing to the increasing per capita expenditure and growing urbanization.
